PhD Graduates

Shuang is a PhD student in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UNSW Sydney. Her research aims to develop a classification system to determine the susceptibility of shallow urban lakes to algal blooms. This project will provide a better understanding of design guideline limitations, provide recommendations for improved waterbody design and modelling, and identify trends of algae bloom occurrence under different climate change scenario for long-term forecasting.

Rafael is a PhD student in the School of Chemical Engineering at UNSW Sydney. His research explores the optimisation of drinking water treatment strategies in the presence algal metabolites, with a focus on taste and odour compounds. The project aims to identify, characterise, quantifying and model the mechanisms related to adsorption and biodegradation processes involving taste and odour compounds within biological activated carbon filters.

PhD student

Daisy is a PhD student in the School of Chemical Engineering at UNSW Sydney. Her research aims to develop a comprehensive kinetic model to describe oxidation processes. Oxidation is commonly employed to remove toxic microbes and their metabolites at drinking water treatment plants. The project will focus on oxidant decay, algal cell lysis, organic matter degradation, and toxin, taste and odour treatment using several oxidants under different reaction conditions.

Chung Yiin (Johnson) is a PhD student in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UNSW Sydney. He completed his Bachelor of Applied Science (Bioindustrial Technology) with Honours and Master of Science focusing on entomoremediation back in Malaysia. Chung Yiin’s PhD project intends to reveal the taste and odour (T&O) compounds in raw water through chemical and sensory analysis. This project aims to enhance the detection of T&O compounds, devise an improved T&O wheel, and develop a risk indicator database for various T&O chemicals.

Jin is a PhD student in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UNSW Sydney. She completed her Bachelor of Engineering (Water Supply and Drainage) and Master of Engineering on river remediation in China. Her PhD research explores the biogenic source of taste and odor compounds, with a focus on improving critical control points in drinking water treatment plants. This project takes a multidisciplinary approach that integrates biochemistry, water treatment technologies and statistical analysis. It aims to identify microbes that produce taste and odor and establish cause-and-effects relationships between microbial activity and our perception of water quality.
